Fresh casual burger chain from Finland expands internationally
Friends & Brgrs opened its first international location in Copenhagen on July 27. With an intense focus on high-quality ingredients, transparency and preparing everything from scratch, the fast-growing chain wants to change the way people think of ‘burgers and fries’.
Anticipation was high in Copenhagen, and people were lining up in front of the restaurant before the opening. “We knew that people here like burgers, but the warm welcome took us by surprise.” says CEO and co-founder Peter Fagerholm. The new restaurant seats around 100 people and is located on Strøget, the lively shopping street in central Copenhagen.
Friends & Brgrs was founded by six friends with a shared passion for burgers. They decided to open a restaurant together, and traveled around the US and Europe in search of inspiration. The first restaurant opened its doors in Pietarsaari in 2014, and the chain now has four restaurants in Finland.
Friends & Brgrs is a ‘fresh casual’ chain, distinguishing itself from fast food chain by sourcing fresh ingredients and making the food from scratch. “We do everything in-house: bake our own buns, grind the meat and triple cook our fries. We’re an anomaly among restaurant chains, typically everything is centralized and precooked in order to save money” explains CFO and co-founder Kaj Fagerholm. “We basically want to combine the ingredients and cooking techniques you’d find in a fine dining restaurant with the convenience of fast food.”
Transparency is another important aspect of Friends & Brgrs’ concept. “All of our restaurants have an open kitchen, so the customers can watch as their food is being prepared” says Kaj Fagerholm. “Transparency also means that we tell our customers exactly what goes into our food, and where the ingredients come from.”
Peter Fagerholm is optimistic about the prospects for future expansion. “Right now we’re focused on the Nordic and European markets, but we believe our concept works elsewhere as well. We’re certainly not the first or only burger chain, but we focus obsessively on taste and quality. At the end of the day, there will always be a demand for great burgers.”
